About Bonaire

Bonaire is a quiet, low-rise Dutch Caribbean island where the real attractions are below the waterline: a protected fringing reef, sea turtles, flamingos, and a landscape shaped by salt and wind. Cruise ships call at Kralendijk, a compact, walkable capital, usually on Southern Caribbean ABC itineraries. For the American traveler who fears being herded, Bonaire rewards independent wandering and outdoor adventure, but it is not a shopping-mall or mega-resort port.

Typical routes

  • Southern Caribbean ABC loop: Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, typically round-trip from Miami or Fort Lauderdale.
  • Longer Southern Caribbean or Grand Caribbean itineraries connecting the ABC islands with San Juan, Barbados, Panama, or the Windward Islands.

Ports overview

Kralendijk is Bonaire's only cruise port. Large cruise ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to a small pier in the town center, while smaller expedition and yacht-style ships may use the municipal pier or marina. The port is exposed to trade winds, so tender operations can occasionally be delayed or cancelled in strong weather.

Cruise season

November through April is the prime cruise season. October and May are shoulder months. Bonaire sits south of the main hurricane belt, but brief tropical showers and stronger winds can occur from October through February.
