About Brunei

Brunei is Southeast Asia's quiet exception: a small, wealthy, Islamic sultanate on the island of Borneo that has traded mass tourism for slow, dignified royal heritage. Most cruise calls are one-day stops at the deep-water port of Muara, with the classic excursion combining the golden Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, the Royal Regalia Museum, and a boat ride through the stilted water village of Kampong Ayer into mangrove rivers where proboscis monkeys live. There is no conventional river cruise product, but the Brunei River and the rainforest waterways of Temburong give independent-minded travelers exactly the off-script, un-herded experience they fear they've lost elsewhere.

Typical routes

  • Borneo Explorer: Singapore/Kota Kinabalu to Brunei on small expedition ships.
  • Southeast Asia Grand Voyage: fly-cruise loops from Singapore, Hong Kong, or Bali that include Muara as a one-day cultural stop.

Ports overview

Brunei is a niche, often tender-only call on Southeast Asia and Borneo itineraries. The only large-ship port is Muara, about 25 km northeast of Bandar Seri Begawan. There is no purpose-built cruise terminal; ships either tie up at a commercial wharf or anchor offshore and tender. Once ashore, the classic excursion combines the capital's mosques, the Royal Regalia Museum, and a boat ride through Kampong Ayer and the Brunei River mangroves.

Cruise season

Year-round; the drier window is generally January–April and July–September. Brunei is equatorial, with tropical showers, high humidity, and temperatures of 24–33°C (75–91°F) year-round. Southeast Asia cruise season peaks November–March.
