About Honduras
Honduras is a land of ancient Maya cities and a wild Caribbean coast, but cruise visitors overwhelmingly see only Roatán. This package is honest about that imbalance: the reef and Bay Islands are world-class; mainland Honduras is richer in culture and history but requires more planning and a higher tolerance for rough edges. Best experienced via small-group excursions or expedition-style cruises rather than mass-market shore excursions.
Typical routes
- Western Caribbean Classic — round-trip cruises from Florida/Gulf of Mexico ports; Roatán is the characteristic Honduran stop, often paired with Cozumel, Costa Maya, Belize City, or Grand Cayman.
- Bay Islands & Central American Coastal — expedition/small-ship sailings from Belize or Panama that can include Roatán, Utila, La Ceiba, and Trujillo; emphasizes nature, Maya/Caribbean culture, and uncrowded anchorages.
Ports overview
Roatán handles the overwhelming majority of cruise traffic. Mainstream Western Caribbean itineraries use Roatán as a beach/nature port, while small-ship/expedition lines are the realistic way to see mainland Honduras and Utila. The infrastructure outside Roatán is not built for mass cruise tourism, which is exactly what makes it appealing to the independent-minded traveler.
Cruise season
Coastal cruising season peaks November–April; wet season May–October and hurricane season June–November. River excursions are weather-dependent and may be suspended in heavy rains.
