About Taiwan

Taiwan is a safe, compact, culturally layered island with dramatic east-coast scenery, world-class food, and efficient cruise ports. Keelung serves Taipei in the north, Kaohsiung anchors the south, and Hualien, Taitung, and Penghu add scenic and outlying-island variety. Most visits are port calls on broader Asia itineraries, but a Taiwan-focused coastal cruise makes an excellent milestone trip, especially from October through April.

Typical routes

  • Japan–Taiwan–Philippines loop: typical 10–18 night Asia cruises that call at Keelung and Kaohsiung, often starting in Tokyo/Yokohama, Hong Kong, or Singapore.
  • Taiwan island and outlying-islands circumnavigation: 7–12 night voyages, usually on smaller or expedition ships, combining Keelung, Hualien, Taitung, Magong, and sometimes Kinmen.

Ports overview

Taiwan is not a traditional river-cruise destination, but a compelling coastal cruise stop. Keelung and Kaohsiung anchor the north and south; Hualien and Taitung offer dramatic east-coast scenery; Magong/Penghu adds outlying island charm.

Cruise season

October–April is best; May and September are shoulder months; July–September carries higher typhoon risk.
