Tacoma pairs a working waterfront with a lively arts scene and clear-day views of Mount Rainier. Downtown, the Museum of Glass and Washington State History Museum make an easy cultural doubleheader. The Bridge of Glass, adorned with Dale Chihuly’s work, links the museum district with downtown. Along Ruston Way, waterfront paths, seafood restaurants, and views across Commencement Bay invite a slower pace. Point Defiance Park offers forest trails and gardens within city limits.
Port Angeles faces the Strait of Juan de Fuca, with the Olympic Mountains rising behind town. It is a working harbor and a convenient gateway to Olympic National Park. From downtown, visitors can reach the park visitor center and drive toward Hurricane Ridge, when the mountain road is open. Stroll the waterfront, browse local galleries, or take the ferry across the strait to Victoria, British Columbia. Here, salt air and wild landscapes meet in a welcoming small-town base.
Port Townsend rewards a slower arrival, with Victorian storefronts and grand homes lining its compact waterfront. Once a prosperous 19th-century port, it now pairs maritime history with independent galleries, cafés, and working boatyards. Walk the bluff-top streets for views across Admiralty Inlet. At Fort Worden, coastal batteries and open grounds recall the town’s strategic past. The Olympic Peninsula’s forests and shoreline are close at hand.
Between Washington’s mainland and Vancouver Island, the San Juan Islands reward travelers who value open water, wildlife, and unhurried days. From Friday Harbor, ferries and boats connect you with forested shorelines, quiet coves, and small island communities. Watch for orcas, especially in summer, though sightings are never guaranteed. Explore by car, bicycle, or foot; finish with local seafood as evening light settles across the Salish Sea.

Anacortes sits on Fidalgo Island, where Washington’s mainland meets the Salish Sea. Its ferry terminal connects the town with the San Juan Islands. Deception Pass State Park is a short drive south. Explore historic downtown, browse independent shops, or follow the waterfront to Cap Sante Marina. Allow time for island views and local history. The harbor offers a close look at working life on the water.
Friday Harbor is the San Juan Islands’ lively small-town hub, set on San Juan Island’s sheltered eastern shore. Ferries arrive beside a compact waterfront, where galleries, cafés and independent shops make an easy first stroll. Beyond town, quiet roads lead past farms, shoreline parks and views across the Salish Sea. Join a whale-watching trip or visit the Whale Museum, then return in time for a locally caught dinner.
