At the meeting of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers, Pittsburgh begins with a view worth pausing for. Ride the Duquesne Incline to Mount Washington, where the city’s bridges and three rivers spread below. The Andy Warhol Museum offers a distinctive collection. In Oakland, the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History deserve time. Then browse the Strip District’s food shops and market streets.
Marietta stands where the Muskingum River meets the Ohio, its waterfront shaped by more than two centuries of river trade. Founded in 1788, it was the first permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory. Campus Martius Museum traces the town’s founding and the region’s early history. Nearby, Mound Cemetery pairs notable graves with an ancient earthwork. A riverfront stroll and a visit to the Ohio River Museum reveal how steamboats linked inland towns to wider markets.
Set on the Ohio River in northeastern Kentucky, Maysville rewards a closer look beyond the waterfront. Once known as Limestone, the town grew around a vital river crossing into the early American frontier. Its compact historic district showcases 19th-century architecture, independent shops and local museums. Walk the riverfront, then visit nearby Old Washington, an 18th-century settlement closely tied to Kentucky’s early history.
Cincinnati rewards travelers who look beyond its riverfront skyline. Set on the north bank of the Ohio River, the city pairs handsome nineteenth-century architecture with a lively cultural scene. In Over-the-Rhine, restored brewery buildings and Italianate streets lead to Findlay Market, Ohio’s oldest continuously operated public market. The Cincinnati Art Museum and Cincinnati Museum Center offer rewarding stops, while riverfront parks frame views across to Kentucky.
Madison occupies a slender isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, giving Wisconsin’s capital an unusually close relationship with water. Begin at the State Capitol, whose white granite dome anchors downtown. Nearby, the University of Wisconsin–Madison offers museums, lakeside walks, and a lively campus setting. In season, the Saturday farmers’ market circles Capitol Square with Wisconsin produce and local specialties. Lakefront paths offer an easy change of pace.
Louisville rewards a day ashore with a clear sense of place: riverfront views, historic neighborhoods, and Kentucky’s best-known traditions. Explore bourbon heritage at the Frazier History Museum or along the Urban Bourbon Trail. Baseball fans can watch bats take shape at the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, lies south of downtown. Save time for NuLu, where independent shops and restaurants make an inviting finale.
Henderson offers a quieter Nevada interlude, near Las Vegas, with desert trails, broad skies and Lake Las Vegas. Explore Water Street’s shops and cafés, then visit the Clark County Museum to trace Southern Nevada’s past. Outdoor enthusiasts can head for Lake Mead National Recreation Area, where coves, red-rock landscapes and Hoover Dam make memorable excursions. With polished dining and easy access to the Strip, Henderson rewards travelers who prefer room to breathe between city lights.
Paducah sits at the meeting of the Ohio and Tennessee rivers, with a riverfront that shaped its fortunes. Downtown, 50 floodwall murals trace the city’s history across nearly a mile of concrete. The National Quilt Museum celebrates the craft behind Paducah’s UNESCO designation as a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art. Brick streets, galleries and restored 19th-century buildings make the compact center rewarding to explore on foot.
St. Louis built its fortunes on the Mississippi, and the riverfront still explains the city’s enduring importance. Ride to the top of the Gateway Arch for a sweeping view, then explore the museum beneath it. Nearby, the Old Courthouse recalls the Dred Scott case, while Forest Park holds major museums and the Saint Louis Zoo.
