Set on the Cumberland River, Nashville pairs country music with serious history and a confident Southern spirit. Hear live musicians in intimate rooms, then visit the Country Music Hall of Fame or the Ryman Auditorium. Beyond the stage, explore Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage, browse independent shops and sample hot chicken, a local specialty. Museums, historic neighborhoods and a lively dining scene give the city plenty to explore between performances. Take time by the riverfront for a quieter view of Nashville.
Paducah sits at the meeting of the Ohio and Tennessee rivers, with a riverfront that shaped its fortunes. Downtown, 50 floodwall murals trace the city’s history across nearly a mile of concrete. The National Quilt Museum celebrates the craft behind Paducah’s UNESCO designation as a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art. Brick streets, galleries and restored 19th-century buildings make the compact center rewarding to explore on foot.
Savannah rewards those who explore on foot. Its historic district places leafy squares, Federal and Greek Revival homes, and live-oak avenues within easy reach. Along the river, former cotton warehouses now hold restaurants, shops, and hotels. Look beyond the handsome façades for a city shaped by commerce, conflict, and coastal foodways. Allow time for shrimp and grits, then linger beneath the moss-draped oaks.
Florence occupies Oregon’s central coast, where the Siuslaw River meets the Pacific. Its small harbor and Old Town give the city a maritime character, while cafés and galleries line the historic waterfront. Beyond town, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area stretches along the shore, offering striking views and walking trails. Heceta Head Lighthouse, north of Florence, is among the coast’s most photographed landmarks.
Decatur, Alabama, sits on the Tennessee River, where wooded banks and open water frame an inviting riverfront. Historic districts reveal Victorian-era homes and a quieter perspective on the city’s past. The Cook Museum of Natural Science brings regional wildlife and geology to life. Nearby, the Carnegie Visual Arts Center showcases local and regional work. Point Mallard Park adds trails, golf and broad river views. Discover a measured mix of history, culture and time beside the water.
Chattanooga pairs a working riverfront with mountain views and a compact, walkable downtown. The Tennessee River runs through the city, shaping its riverfront. The Tennessee Aquarium and restored Walnut Street Bridge are within easy reach of downtown. Lookout Mountain has Civil War sites, valley views and the Incline Railway, among the world’s steepest passenger railways. Leave time for the city’s museums, dining and walks beside the water.
