  1. Days 1–2

    Arles, France

Arles stands on the Rhône in Provence, where Roman monuments and a working southern French city share the same streets. The UNESCO-listed Roman theatre and amphitheatre remain central landmarks, built when ancient Arelate prospered. Vincent van Gogh painted here from 1888 to 1889, drawn by the region’s clear light. Visit the Fondation Vincent van Gogh, then explore the old town’s Provençal markets and café terraces.

  2. Day 2

    Gallician, France

Gallician sits beside the Canal du Rhône à Sète, at the western edge of the Camargue. Its marina offers a quiet arrival, with wide skies and working waterways replacing the bustle of larger ports. From here, explore wetlands known for white horses, black bulls and flamingos, or follow the canal’s towpaths by bicycle. Nearby Vauvert brings cafés and everyday southern French life within easy reach.

  3. Day 3

    Aigues-Mortes, France

Step through the medieval walls of Aigues-Mortes, and the Camargue’s wide horizons begin just beyond. Founded by Louis IX in the 13th century, this compact town retains an exceptional circuit of ramparts. Walk the walls for views over tiled roofs, canals and salt pans, often tinted rose by algae. Then linger in the central square or visit the Tour de Constance, a formidable keep with centuries of history.

  4. Day 5

    Villeneuve-les-Maguelone, France

Set between the Mediterranean and the lagoons south of Montpellier, Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone feels a world apart. Salt marshes and vineyards frame the approach to Maguelone Cathedral, a remarkable Romanesque church on a quiet coastal peninsula. Walk or cycle the causeway to explore its stone interiors, then linger over lagoon views and a broad Mediterranean beach. Birdlife, open skies and Montpellier’s markets make this an appealing choice for travellers who prefer place to spectacle.

  5. Days 5–7

    Sete, France

Sète is France’s working Mediterranean port, set between the sea and the vast Étang de Thau. Canals cross the centre, alongside fishing boats, cafés and a covered market. Ride or walk up Mont Saint-Clair for broad views across the harbour, lagoons and coast. Sample oysters from nearby Bouzigues or choose the day’s catch at a port-side restaurant. Museums honour poet Paul Valéry and singer Georges Brassens, both born here, adding cultural depth to this lively port.
