  1. Days 1–2

    Regensburg, Germany

Regensburg rewards a day on foot, with a remarkably intact medieval centre set beside the Danube. Cross the 12th-century Stone Bridge, then follow narrow lanes to the Gothic cathedral and the Old Town Hall. Roman foundations, merchant houses and riverside cafés reveal a city shaped by two millennia of trade. The UNESCO-listed centre feels lived in, not staged, and its compact scale leaves time for a Bavarian lunch.

  2. Day 3

    Straubing, Germany

Straubing brings you to the heart of Lower Bavaria, where the Danube meets a town shaped by centuries of trade. The broad town square has pastel façades, cafés and Gothic St. Jakob’s Basilica, its tower a landmark. At the Gäubodenmuseum, Roman finds reveal the region’s ancient past, including the celebrated Straubing Treasure. Walk the old streets, then linger over a Bavarian beer beside the river.

  3. Day 4

    Linz, Austria

Linz rewards curious travelers with a rare blend of imperial architecture, modern art and working-city energy. On the Danube, its compact center makes an easy introduction to Upper Austria, while cafés serve the famous Linzer Torte. At Ars Electronica Center, interactive exhibitions explore technology and the future; nearby Lentos Art Museum adds a striking riverside counterpoint. Ride the Pöstlingbergbahn for broad views over the city and river, then return to the baroque Hauptplatz.

  4. Day 5

    Melk, Austria

Melk stands at the western end of Austria’s Wachau, a UNESCO-listed Danube valley. Its vineyards, apricot orchards and medieval towns make the river journey especially rewarding. High above the water, Melk Abbey commands attention with its baroque church, imperial rooms and celebrated library. Founded as a Benedictine monastery in 1089, it remains active and ranks among Austria’s most memorable cultural landmarks.

  5. Day 5

    Spitz an der Donau, Austria

Spitz sits on the Danube, in the heart of the Wachau. This UNESCO-listed landscape was shaped by vineyards and river trade. From the quay, lanes climb toward Tausendeimerberg, the “thousand-bucket hill,” where steep terraces yield Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. Explore the Gothic parish church, or walk to the medieval ruins of Hinterhaus for broad river views. Here, you can discover Austria’s wine country at its source.

  6. Day 5

    Wachau Valley, Austria

Follow the Danube into Austria’s Wachau Valley, where vineyard terraces, medieval towns and fortified abbeys line a UNESCO-listed landscape. At Dürnstein, blue-and-white church towers mark the town where Richard the Lionheart was held captive. Melk Abbey commands the western entrance, its grand Baroque rooms overlooking the river and surrounding hills. Sample Grüner Veltliner from steep local vineyards, or explore by bicycle, boat or on foot.

  7. Day 6

    Vienna, Austria

Arrive in Vienna by river and give the city more than a passing glance. Its imperial centre rewards a slow walk, from St Stephen’s Cathedral to the grand Ringstrasse boulevards. Set aside time for Schönbrunn Palace, once the Habsburgs’ summer residence, or choose the Kunsthistorisches Museum for its remarkable collections. Then take a seat in a traditional coffeehouse; in Vienna, coffee and cake are part of the city’s daily ritual.

  8. Days 7–8

    Budapest, Hungary

Budapest makes a memorable arrival, with the Danube dividing hilly Buda from lively, level Pest. From the river, the Hungarian Parliament’s Gothic Revival façade commands attention, especially after dark. Cross the Chain Bridge to explore Castle Hill, or stay in Pest for cafés, markets, and celebrated thermal baths. Allow time to linger: Budapest’s pleasures are best discovered on foot, over a long lunch, and beside the water.
